Moot Movie – Main Title Sequence

In taking many steps toward the completion of the Moot Movie, the opening title sequence needed to be created for an introduction to our supernatural underworld that is infiltrating the media landscape of Los Angeles.

Immediate goals with the film – still mostly in green – are to fill in a few more gaps so that it is watchable for a select group of folks to critique and give notes toward solidifying any necessary pick-up shots and editorial modifications.

Finishing this pass of the main title may have taken a few months, but was well worth it. Building that crazy Hollywood skyline not only required finding the right perch for my camera – thanks to Edge Performing Arts – but it also needed huge hours of digital imaging and then animation. The entire piece was animated in Adobe After Effects.

Always great to cross these mini thresholds in completing the various sections of the film.

Time to place the new title sequence into the cut and push forward.

The MOOT MONSTER born.

From design to animation, the MOOT MONSTER has been in production for over a year. See this mischievous typographical abomination take the stage at Kickstarter.com where we have launched our campaign to raise finishing funds for the Moot Movie.

The MOOT MONSTER is pulled from the fictional world of the Moot Movie. Mattox Durant has created him as the mascot for his Moot Magazine. The MOOT MONSTER is an interplanetary guard dog protecting earth by catching evil alien spacecraft and munching them to bits. The animated birth of the MOOT MONSTER can be seen at the Moot Movie Kickstarter page. Don’t miss it.

Into reality the MOOT MONSTER has come, as a Custom USB flash drive, an animated video series, comic book, and limited edition 3D print. Please welcome our supernatural mascot, he only wants to keep you safe, especially with the impending date of 12-21-2012, our Kickstarter end date and possible alien invasion.

Mooting My Way Through Life

As of late I’ve been putting together a crowd funding campaign with either Indie Go Go or Kickstarter to raise finishing funds for the Moot Movie. After observing many other campaigns I thought it might be a good idea to add a mooter monster toy to the rewards for donors. What manifested in my mind was a modified Moot logo turned into a sharp toothed, wide grinning typographical monster.

Over the last couple of days I’ve been stop motion animating a hunk of sculpey clay. Carving up the fleshy mooter and constantly reshaping it has tried by patience, but I’ve never feigned from time consuming detailed work. Working with clay is challenging, especially when your design consists of flat edges and straight lines. I been squishing, pulling, dragging, twisting, flipping this little demon all across a green field to be keyed out – environment in the making. Like any newborn, character development comes over time and in this dude’s case, many havoc reeking life experiences.

Back to the crowd funding… it’s standard to create a personal video pitching your project to potential donors. Cindera, Dyllen and I are going to wing it. Hopefully something magical will happen, even get lucky catching something on video that is not of our normal world. We’ll be watchin’ and huntin’.

Dyllen has been helping out on Moot Movie, taught her how to take out the green using Ultimatte Software in AE CS4, this amazing stand alone plug in is EOL (end of life), can’t afford to recode for 64 bit. And so time continues to press forward one pixel at a time.

Moot had it’s origins back in 1997.

It started with my creation of Trevor the Tabloid Paparazzo, a photo based web comic. Trevor was a cool character, totally of the time, when the internet was relatively new and the connection was super slow. His gal, an adult star, played by my wife Cindera Che. As time moved forward my feelings for the type of characters changed. While Trevor became Mattox, Cindera made it clear that she would no longer play a porn star. So China-Rain became the powerful witch Deva.

Here are a few of Mitch Watson’s words for Trevor: “Every job is different, so you’ve got to be prepared. I’ve been tracking Biddle for over a year. No margin for error. One thing you should know about me is that I’m not one of those pussies like Avedon who skulks around county fairs snapping shots of worn out milkmaids and shit-kickers who look like they’ve been the victim of one to many cattle mutations. I work in the city, and what I shoot is unrehearsed and ugly. Like I mentioned before, part of my job is lying for a living. I lie to get my information. I lie to get my shot. And if lying don’t work, lookin’ at this bed will tell you there’s always other options. Bottom line; get the story, anyway you can. ”

Dreams and Memories

How to depict a dreamy memory of a horrific event. In the Moot Movie, Mattox as a child looses an important family member in a tragic accident… or was it a murder. I’m now cutting this sequence, finding the right tone and pacing. I liked the spirit world depicted in The Last Air Bender. Right now I’m just in FCP which is so limited, where is parenting Apple developers? Once I get into After Effects, then I can wield great artistic styling and effects.

Brain Static

If you’ve ever had media overload, you’ve gotta check out Brain Static. It is an experimental film I created 10 years ago using movies shot on 16mm back at UCLA in the late 80’s. I recently found the AE file and upped the resolution to HD for all the Moot fans to enjoy.

Animated Mooter Portrait

I shot a series of stop motion stills and video to create what I’m calling a Mooter Self Portrait. My head is going to repeatedly spin into new characters that are always mooting- the graphic word moot and its variations coming from my mouth. The heads vary in emotion and visual style. I hope to interest others in creating their own mooter portraits, the notion of a mooting avatar, eventually perpetuating into a moot meme. Much work ahead, been messing with this thing off and on for the past 4 months. Even recorded VO of a bunch of people mooting for others to use in the Moot contest. Stay tuned for a wild ride with your Captain Mooter.
